They had made it into Germany before Damien had started to act weirdly. It was actually
the second day on German soil that he revealed to Nick his wound.
It was from the bullet that had killed Doe. It had clipped his neck a bit and
broken skin. It had just been a basic wound. But it hadn’t healed quite right. The scab
was easily broken and it would bleed freely for hours.
His skin had grown a greenish color around the wound and his veins were a dark
red. He spoke with an airy whisper at some points and at others he would yell, as if he
could not hear correctly.
“I don’t feel quite right, Nick.” Damien had said, a hand on his best-friend’s
shoulder. “I feel sick. Really sick.” He added.
Nick looked at him worriedly, “We’re almost to Berlin, hang on buddy.” He said.
Damien’s condition got worse as the days, no, the hours went by. He grew more tired, more
numb and more detached as each hour passed.
Traitor kept telling everyone they were only days from the Rise Against camp. They
had long since ditched the jeep, it had run out of gas. Nick spent his days taking turns
with Andria as to who helped the sickly Damien walk. He also constantly checked to make
sure there were no holes in his messenger’s bag and that Doe’s letter was still in his
pocket.
Why did that bastard have to hand his letter to Nick? Why him? Why couldn’t it be
someone else? Just as Nick was about to internally complain about having to hand this
letter to Doe’s wife and explain that he was dead Keith started screaming.
“What the hell!?” Dave exclaimed and Keith came running back from over the hill he
had been over.
“It’s there! It’s there! The camp! It has to be!” Keith screamed, every cell in
his body completely excited, his face was almost as bright as it had been before Russia,
when he was his normal self.
Traitor started smiling like an idiot. “God, finally.” He said, as the group
hurried to the top of the hill.
Before them was a massive wall, constructed of tree logs. All around the camp was
a healthy forest of tall trees. Two men sat at the inside of the gate, threw a chain
linked fence they caught sight of the group.
“Mein Gott.” One breathed in surprise, “Whatever that means.” The other said and
then turned around and yelled, “They’re here! The first group! They’re here! They’re
back!”
The German man began to unchain the fence as the first of the group neared; a man
with orange hair and a bright smile.
One by one they entered the camp. As all of them made it inside the German man
locked up the gate. Commander Traitor straightened and looked up.
“We need Sofia out here, right now.” He said and then a voice came from behind the
small crowd that had gathered.
“I am right here, Traitor.” It said with a German accent. Nick looked up, he had
imagined what Sofia Wundt had looked like, and the woman that stood before them was not
it.
He had expected a heavy set woman with brown hair and dark brown eyes. But instead
he got a petite woman with long blond hair pulled back in a French braid. Her eyes were
brown, but they were evil looking and across her face was a three fingered scar.
Traitor was silent and moment, staring at her. He straightened all the way up and
cleared his throat.
“Damien here, he’s sick.” He said and Sofia smirked, “And straight to ze vork as
per usual, nice to see you, Traitor.” She said, walking past him without so much as a
second glance and hitting her knees next to Damien.
Damien was resting on the ground, his head in Andria’s lap. “Vhere did he get
zis?” Sofia asked, looking underneath the bandage curiously, she winced as she saw the
wound. It was discolored and festering.
“I’ll tell you later.” Traitor said, “Can you help him?” Nick asked and Sofia
looked up into his face.
“You must be Nick, I can tell from ze voice. I am unsure if I can help him, but I
vill try my best.” She said, “Bring him in here,” she said, walking towards the only
building in the camp.
Andria and Nick helped carry Damien into the building while Traitor followed. The
rest of the group was left behind in the courtyard to be questioned by the men about the
outside world.
The lab was one story and only had two rooms. The one they were in currently in
was massive and held tons of machines that were busy beeping and buzzing. All around the
room were floor fans that blew hot air around.
“Zere in a group of twenty or so solar powered generators in the back, do not ask
how long it took to get zem here because I do not even know.” Sofia said, she pushed piles
of papers off of a table to the ground and motioned for Andria and Nick to place Damien
there.
They gently slid Damien onto the wood. He was barely conscious, his eyes kept
fluttering and he was moving his mouth as if he were speaking. Andria backed up and let
Sofia take her place to observe Damien.
Andria turned away from the group and saw the second room in the building. It was
like a viewing room. She saw, through a glass wall, a girl sitting in a chair. The girl
was pretty, with her long brown hair in a braid and a bandanna around her neck.
The girl was tied to the chair by her wrists and ankles. Andria frowned and the
girl in the chair noticed her and glared right back at her. Andria crossed her arms as if
to say, “I didn’t put you there, don’t look at me like that.”
But the girl continued to glare at Andria. “Hey, who’s this bitchy girl behind tha
glass?” Andria asked Sofia. They had just sat Damien up in a chair very much like the
girl’s in the room.
“Oh, her name is Sara Ross. She’s an ex CEDA doctor and zat’s about as much as ve
know. She vas experiencing symptoms of the change from human to infected. So ve locked her
in zere.” Sofia explained, “Don’t be so frightened, ve don’t lock people up for no
reason.” She said with a chuckle. Sofia paused and looked through the glass, Sara gave her
a glare of complete and utter hatred.
“And yes, she is quite bitchy.” Sofia said sourly. Damien was tied by his wrists
and ankles to the chair same as Sara now.
“This is a precaution.” Traitor told the angry looking Nick. “Just in case, we
don’t want him breaking loose. It’s a just in case scenario.” He assured him.
Sofia and Traitor carried Damien into the room and sat him next to Sara, who
looked curiously over to him and started shouting at Sofia.
“Let me out of here you bitch!” She screamed, “I haven’t done anything wrong and I
feel fine!” Sara yelled and Sofia glared at her.
“I haven’t finished running my blood screen tests!” Sofia yelled back, “So sit
back and make a new friend!” she said, pointing to Damien. Then Sofia stormed out of the
room after Traitor.
“Ugh,” Sofia said, running her fingers over her hair, “That woman is impossible.”
She added. Then she turned to Nick and Andria.
“I vill begin testing his blood immediately,” She said, waving a vial of crimson
blood at them. “I vill get back to you ze moment somzing pops up.” She said.
Then she shooed them out of the lab, like she was extremely busy. Traitor was
kicked out as well and looked irritated.
“What are all those machines fer?” Andria asked Traitor and he gave her a serious
look, “Sofia spends her days locked up in that lab, working on synthesizing a cure for the
Green Flu.” He said exasperatedly.
“Sometimes she forgets to eat, or sleep.” Traitor added, “Yew glad ta be home?
Raid?” Andria asked and Traitor let out a content sigh, “Almost, I’m still missing a
friend.” He said and then waved to them as he walked off.
Andria took Nick’s hand in her own and hugged his arm. “He’ll be alright, Nick.
Ah’m sure.” She said. He covered her hand with his own and sighed. “I hope so.” He said.
Together they walked into the new camp. New faces greeted them kindly and offered
their assistance with anything. There was a certain lively feeling that they had not felt
in a while. Keith was finally his old self and he and Ellis sat together laughing over
good old times. Kayla was there, sitting next to Ellis, his arm around her and her face a
little pink. Her laugh had its usual chime to it.
Dave was listening to Ellis and Keith, smiling and rolling his eyes. Traitor was
talking to Marina in the medical tent, catching her up on everything and talking to Johnny
over the radio.
Nick sat down at the table Keith was making a ruckus at and allowed himself to
smile and be happy again for once in a long time.
But there was always that worry. The worry for his friend, and the fear of what
may happen to him.
But Nick covered it with a smile and a soft laugh.
