Nick was woken by a cry. He heard distant screams echoing around the camp. The voice sent

shivers down his spine and caused him to jump to his feet. Nick took a peek out of the

tent flap and saw a small group of men run towards the outskirts of the circle.

Nick then backed up into the tent to see Dave and Ellis sitting up. Ellis had

nothing but rage in his face and tears running down his cheeks. “Ah told yew.” He spat,

“Oh Ah told yew. They’re here.” He said.

Then Traitor sat up from the rug he had been sleeping on and said, “I heard it

too. If they’re here and they’ve made that noise, they’re in trouble.” He then stood and

picked up his rifle from next to him.

“Either that or we are.” Doe said as he jumped to his feet. It was apparent that

no one had slept very much that night; they were all awakened by the cries of their

friends so easily.

Everyone grabbed their firearms and readied themselves for whatever may meet them.

“Here” Doe said, pressing a letter into Nick’s chest, “Just in case.” Doe said. Nick

stuffed the letter into his pocket. “You’ll be fine.” Nick said and Doe smiled to him.

“That’s why it’s just in case.” He said, “What we’re doing is stupid.” Traitor

said, “If anyone doesn’t want to-” he was cut off.

“Save it, Traitor.” Dave said, Keith then clicked the safety off of his shotgun

and grinned ear to ear, “Ain’t nobody backing down, Commander. This is the first thing to

fight for in months.” He said.

So there they were, walking in the thin snow towards where the cries had

originated from. As they grew nearer a cavalry of Arseny’s men walked towards them.

“Something wake you?” Arseny asked, speaking loudly over the distance between the

two groups that was getting smaller and smaller.

“Yeah, everything alright?” Traitor asked gruffly. “Oh, nothing out of the

ordinary, what happened?” Arseny asked, it was apparent that he knew exactly what had

happened. He and his men looked as ready, if not more so, than Traitor and his group.

“We heard a cry, multiple.” Traitor said, “Oh, if you stay here much longer you

may grow accustom to them. You hear their cries very often.” Arseny said with a sneer.

“Felix told me.” Ellis said, “Felix told me yew’ve got them.” His face was pale,

his brow furrowed and angry tears still streamed down his cheeks.

“Felix is known around here as a liar.” Arseny said, “It would be unwise to listen

to him.”

“Yew’re gonna give them back to us.” Ellis said, raising his weapon and pointing

it at Arseny. “Yew’re gonna do it or else.”

Arseny laughed, “You’re only about six people, what can you do other than die?” he

asked, Ellis then took precise aim at Arseny’s head.

“Ah dun care if Ah die or not. As long as Ah kill yew Ah’ll be content.” Ellis

hissed.

“You kill me, American, and they both die.” Arseny said and raised his arms. Two

figures were pushed from the back of the crowd, forward. Both were girls, one was in a

warm jacket and had wavy, long brown hair. The other was in nothing but a ratty old T-

shirt and had her red-brown hair cut in different lengths.

“Kayla!” Ellis cried and Nick almost ran forward. “Andria!” he exclaimed. They

both had gags over their mouths and Andria looked severely beaten. They both looked up and

Andria smiled though her gag. Kayla looked longingly at Ellis.

“Oh thank the lord…” Dave trailed, Traitor joined Ellis and pointed his weapon at

Arseny.

“So what did you do?! You saw two beaten women and took advantage of them!?’ He

exclaimed and Arseny shook his head and smiled.

“They willingly stayed here.” He explained, “And I suppose they willingly allowed

you to tie them up and beat them?” Traitor asked. Arseny glared at him.

Then there came a thunderous noise and a pair of high beam head lights cut the

night. From the side a jeep, outfitted with a snow plow, crushed tents before it and left

a wake of destruction. The jeep headed straight for Arseny. The Chechen man dove backwards

and tumbled out of the way. His men scattered and Andria and Kayla jumped to their feet,

sprinting forward towards their friends.

The jeep halted and came to rest between Arseny and Traitor’s group. Ellis through

his rife to the side and sprinted towards Kayla, his arms outstretched. As soon as she was

there, once again in his hold, he hit his knees. His hands were tangled in her messy hair

and he started crying.

Nick stumbled numbly forward, his feet not acting as fast as his brain had wanted

them to. He met Andria and untied her gag and hands, his expression was of tremendous

relief. She spat the rag out of her mouth, tossed her bindings to the side and wrapped her

arms around his neck.

“Oh, yew’re so late.” She cried, “So late,” She said into his ear. He buried his

face into her neck and said, “I know. I’m sorry.”

The driver’s side door swung open and a figure toppled out, his left leg creating

red spots in the snow as he stumbled towards them.

Traitor and Doe rushed forward to help him. “You must be Felix.” Traitor said and

the man let out a pained smile. “That’s be me,” He said with hurt in his voice. The skin

on his left foot was torn away in some places, his ankle was completely messed up.

“Did you hit him?” Keith asked Felix as Traitor and Doe set him down in the snow.

“No, I don’t think so. The bastard is light on his feet. Just take the jeep and go, before

it’s too late.” Felix said, “And just let ‘im go!?” Keith exclaimed.

“Don’t be stupid! Just take the chance while you have it to escape from this

place!” Felix cried.

“Watch out!” Cried a voice into the night, a voice that hadn’t been heard in such

a long time that everyone looked in awe to the source. Damien sat crouched in the snow,

his support arm resting on his knee and his right arm guiding his rifle along on a pivot.

He began to fire off shots at the men trying to climb to their feet. “Get to the

jeep! Quickly!” He cried, “I can support you for now!”

So Ellis and Nick aided Andria and Kayla to the back of jeep, pushing them up and

into the boxlike bed. Then they took Damien’s job of silencing the men of the camp as he

helped Felix to the jeep.

“Just leave me!” Felix hissed, “Sorry, I can’t.” Damien explained as they neared

the edge of the bed.

Keith had climbed into the driver’s seat and started the engine, readying it to

flee. Damien tossed his rifle into the bed to make use of two hands to help Felix up. As

Damien bent down to lift Felix up by the leg Felix saw a man of the camp point a pistol at

the back of Damien’s head.

Felix lunged forward and knocked Damien to the side, there was a loud crack and

Felix felt himself fall sideways in the snow, a strange warmness started to spread across

his chest and the snow located nearest to his heart began to slowly melt and turn to red.

Felix closed his eyes and felt himself slip off into cold, darkness.
